If you’re the kind of person who holds doors for others, keeps an eye on neighbors homes when they’re away, would trip a purse-snatcher making his escape, you’re a volunteer security guard and should be a member of VSGAA. VSGAA is the nation’s premier support and certification organization for volunteer security guards. When you join VSGAA, you’re telling the world that you’re not just an amateur, volunteer security guard, but a member of an elite corps of dedicated non-professionals. Whether you choose to be an armed or an unarmed volunteer security guard, you’re an integral cog in the Homeland Security system. Whether protecting your church, your neighborhood, or your living room, you’re following in the footsteps of a long line of volunteer security guards going back to the dawn of man. Many Americans have forgotten that the authority of police, and the very foundation of law, comes from the rights and powers of the individual. Volunteer security guards understand that agreeing to loan their authority to the police for the common good does not negate their own ability to exercise that power nor does it relieve them of the responsibility to exercise that authority when faced with the necessity. For many years Volunteer Security Guards were just called good citizens and good neighbors, but in recent years the media, politicians, and hoplophobes (those with an irrational fear of weapons) have tried to paint citizens acting in defense of themselves and others as “vigilantes” and accused them of “taking the law into their own hands.” The result has been a shift in public perception making self-defense, or the means for successfully effecting self-defense, a matter of controversy. An imaginary line has been drawn between those who the media say can be trusted with the responsibility of protecting themselves and others, and those who they say can not be. Even though lawfully armed citizens have a lower crime rate and a lower incidence of firearms related mishaps than do active police officers, the perception has been fostered that only “trained police officers” can be trusted with firearms and are able to prudently take action to stop crime. It was only after a heavily armed lunatic, bent on massacring members of a Colorado church, was stopped by an armed church member that the media found a term that filled the gray area between police and “ordinary” citizens; that term they chose was “Volunteer Security Guard.” In recognition of her role in saving countless lives and bringing the term “Volunteer Security Guard” into the vernacular, VSGAA is proud to announce the induction of Jeanne Assam as the organization’s first Honorary Life Member.
